First female Prime Minister in Denmark

96 years ago women gained the right to vote in Denmark. And yesterday we elected a female Prime Minister. Something to celebrate!

Here she is – Helle Thorning-Schmidt. She’s a social democrat, she’s been the leader of the party for six years and prior to that she was a member of the European Parliament from 1999-2004.

I didn’t vote for her but I did vote for the ‘red block’ in Danish politics which she represents. After ten years of right wing government I am so relieved to see Helle Thorning-Schmidt in the Prime Minister’s office when she steps up in the coming week.

Today all the parties visited the Queen to tell her which candidate they vote for to form a government (yes, yes we are indeed a monarchy). And I was once again proud of my little, safe country when I saw that several of the representatives arrived at the royal palaces on bike.

The future looks bright!
