The Science of Sleep

I just watched the nicest film: The Science of Sleep.

Science of Sleep

Young Stephane Miroux has trouble dividing sleep and dream from waking and real life. His dreams are extremely vivid and a source of creativity but they are also tyrannical in their control over Stephane’s life. When he moves to Paris he falls in love with his neighbour Stephanie who possesses some of the same creativity and weirdness. Due to some misunderstandings created by Stephane´s dreams their way to a relationship is full of winds and turns but as they are getting closer they play fantastic games in the most wonderfully pokerfaced way.

Science of Sleep. Charlotte Gainsbourg. Gael Garcia Bernal

The dream sequences are simply amazing, funny, precise and perfect. Look at this clip for example. I crave that typewriter – how wonderful is that?!

Besides from being funny and poetical (as when Stephane and Stephanie ride on Stephanie’s soft toy horse) the film introduces some interesting questions about the limits of dream and reality and how dreams influence our lives. I think it’s wonderful and both Charlotte Gainsbourg and Gael Garcia Bernal are perfect for their roles.

Highly recommended!

It is truly a wonderful film! And making a felt horse sounds like a sensible thing to do – especially in December. I hope it will be all you wish for!
