The philologist Otto Steen Due (or Eight Two as his friends dubbed him: Otto= 8, Due= 2 in Italian) died three days ago at the age of 68. Otto Steen Due was the translator of Homer, Vergil and Ovid into Danish. And what a magnificent translator he was!
I know he has tortured a lot of students as professor at the University of Århus, but for me what remains is that he brought me the Odyssey and the Iliad of Homer and most significantly the Metamorphoses of Ovid. How I have enjoyed that piece – and thanks to Otto Steen Due who reminded us of the importance and possible excellence of the art of translation.
I am sorry he has passed away before sharing even more classical works with us.
