I have always enjoyed crowd watching, especially in museums. There are so many rules of behavior in a museum and when the museum is crowded these rules collide with a general desire to scream, toss someone out the window, push the others away. With all those people around you can’t stand in awe in front [...]

The last couple of days I have been drinking a lot of tea in the great company of a good friend living in Potsdam outside Berlin. That’s where Frederick the Great’s castle Sanssouci is located and the gardens are wonderful for a walk not least because of the quirky houses and statues you keep stumbling upon [...]

This week’s photo is from Madrid. Not that I went but my brother did and as on most of his travels he took his walrus Valle. Here he is contemplating the view from the hotel.
Valle has been to many places and this photo reminds me of how Amelie’s dad’s garden gnome went to all those [...]

Next up: Haddon Hall. Located a short drive from Chatsworth my friend and I went there on the same day after having had that memorable afternoon tea.
Haddon Hall was a favourite of mine even before I visited it since it happens to portray Thornfield Manor in the best adaptation of Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, the [...]

I just saw a very old email sticking its head up. I have to admit I check my hotmail address very seldom and tonight I did… One very kind Justus asked if I had any pictures from the Cecilia Bartoli concert in Rome in June. He had a ticked but fell ill, so he couldn’t [...]

I promised you reviews of country houses in Britain and I will give you reviews of country houses in Britain. But first let me tell you two things: 1. Never go to Stratford-upon-Avon. It is the worst tourist trap I have ever seen (and I broke the UV-filter on my camera). 2. Go to the [...]

I spent the last week of my holiday in Britain with a good friend. We had both been invited to the wedding of a common friend and we reasoned that driving around the countryside for a week would be the perfect prelude to a fairytale wedding in Cambridge. So we went for the big country [...]

This week I spent in Rome at my best friend’s home. So many good laughs and talks. We even went to a wedding and here we are looking quite happy:
We also got to hear Cecilia Bartoli in concert with Lang Lang and a whole lot of other nice things.

The sound of Greenland is for me the barking, screeching, howling of sledge dogs. Bored sledge dogs waiting for their luck to go sledding or be fed alternately. The only times they were quiet was when they were working or when they slept (which they did a lot…). These dogs are working dogs, not cuddly dogs. [...]
